What are wire ropes and their uses

Wire ropes usually find their usage in rigging and lifting material. This durable mechanical device is made by the twisting of several metal wires to form a single rope. The strength of a wire rope makes it ideal for lifting, supporting and moving a heavy load. Endless wire rope slings has several wires helically wound around a core. This structure enables them to withstand bending stress and abrasion.

They can be classified as regular, lang or alternate depending on how the strands are arranged around the core. Various types of materials ranging from natural fibers to steel are used for making the core. The wires are also lubricated during the manufacturing to ensure that the friction between them is minimal, leading to less corrosion. The various ways in which wire ropes are made are single layer, Seale, Filler wire, Warrington or a combination of any of the two methods.

  • Oil and offshore rope- this type of ropes can withstand the high pressure of turbulent water. The strength and longevity of these ropes are more than the other types..
  • Crane ropes- mostly employed for lifting items, these ropes have a high resistance to bending and a longer life.
  • Elevator rope- The design of this type of Endless wire rope slings ensures smooth and jerk-free movement by providing close dimensional tolerance.
  • Mining rope- this type of rope is resistant to fatigue, abrasion, wear. This provides a longer life and reduces the maintenance cost of machines.
  • Aerial rope- used in passenger ropeways, aerial haulage and other track ropes, this type of wire ropes have to be extremely strong and of excellent quality.
  • Fishing rope- These are designed to be resistant to corrosion to extend the life. They are properly galvanized and lubricated to enhance quality.
  • Structural System- Bridge cables which are ready to install, find their usage in several structures all over the world. They too are extremely durable and corrosion resistant.
  • General Engineering Rope- Tasks like lifting, boring or shipping load use general engineering ropes.

 More strength, flexibility, long life and resistant to abrasion are the major characteristics that determine the usage of these ropes.
