What are wire rope clamps?

A wire rope clamp is known by many other names as well such as a wire rope clip, bulldog clips, a u-bolt clamp, or a u-bolt clip. Once the wire rope has been looped back to form an eye, It is used to clamp its loose end. This fitting consists of a u-bolt(wire rope clamp) and has a saddle that is secured by two nuts. For securing the ends of the wire rope to the length of the rope properly, the minimum requirement is to use at least two or three wire rope clamps.

Wire rope clamps manufacturers manufacture wire rope clips from two types of materials.

1)            Malleable iron

2)            Drop forged steel.

Malleable Clips

  • Malleable wire rope clips are to be used only for non-critical, light-duty applications with small applied loads.
  • Malleable Clips are a light-duty wire rope clip and are not for anything overhead.
  • As the name “malleable” indicates, it is a softer wire rope clip, thus a lighter duty option.
  • They can be used for fences and other applications that do not sustain loads overhead.
  • They should not be used for lifting or suspending a load.

Drop forged clips

  • Drop forged clips have a heavy coating of a zinc solution, meaning they are galvanized.
  • Being galvanized, it holds up to worksite abuse and the elements for a long time.
  • Drop forged steel is excellent for heavy-duty guying applications.
  • They are both strong and resistant to corrosion.

How to use wire rope clamps

We all know that the rigging hardware makes life easy, but only if used properly. When used properly, it makes everything very simple and easy. If mishandled, they can be very dangerous.

So we should always make sure to use all the equipment with the utmost care. It is necessary for one’s own safety.

By reading the instructions about unpacking, installation, and use can make your work less hectic. The proper way to use wire rope clips can be remembered this way: “Never saddle a dead horse.” The saddle of the clip is the piece that fits into the U bolt. The dead-end of a wire rope is the end of the eye that contains the cut side. The U bolt should always be in contact with the dead-end, while the saddle should be on the live end.
